Santas I Have Known (part 1 of 4)

It’s 24 days until Christmas and as anyone who knows me can tell you, I know on any given day just how long it is until my favorite holiday because there is a perpetual countdown application on my computer. I have a Christmas tree (albeit a small one) and a little manger scene in my office 365 days a year. I have lighted candy canes strung across the pool room, and I always have a CD copy of A Christmas Carol and Michael Martin Murphy‘s Cowboy Christmas, Cowboy Songs II in my truck every day of the year.

In case you missed it, I like Christmas.

I was the newspaper reporter who didn’t mind covering multiple Christmas parades (I once covered 7 in one weekend), and I always got the good Christmas feature story assignments. From a little mill village’s new Christmas decorations to performances of Handel’s Messiah, I got them all.

And loved every one.

As I thought about these things, I remembered three Santas who have come into my life. One came in the form of the real Saint Nicholas, and the other two … well … those two were rather unique too.

Stay tuned over the next few days and meet a Santa named Lenny, the REAL Saint Nicholas, and the Santa who was always asking for a handout.
