Ride ’em Cowboy

When I was a newspaper reporter I had the privilege of interviewing thousands of people. From politicians and movie stars to the guy who works on the garbage truck, I heard stories from every aspect of life. But one person stands out.

He was a cowboy from Montana, but not just any cowboy. He was a custom saddle maker and a champion bull rider. During the interview I asked the reporter 101 question, “What does it take to be a champion bull rider?” His answer was a classic.

You’ve gotta want to hang on worse than the bull wants to throw you off.

Writing is like that.

You’ve got to want to write worse than the distractions want to keep you from it.
