Millbrook UMC

Christmas morning we had a beautiful service of lessons and carols at Millbrook United Methodist Church. And out of all the lessons that morning, one stands out above the rest.

Early in the service the children were invited to bring a toy to the altar and share in the blessing of the toys. The ministers blessed trucks, dolls, Buzz Lightyear, cowboy boots, stuffed animals, and asked God’s blessing on the precious ones who brought them.

Then came the reading from Isaiah 11:6-9

The wolf will live with the lamb,
the leopard will lie down with the goat,
the calf and the lion and the yearling together;
and a little child will lead them.
7 The cow will feed with the bear,
their young will lie down together,
and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
8 The infant will play near the cobra’s den,
and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest.
9 They will neither harm nor destroy
on all my holy mountain,
for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the LORD
as the waters cover the sea.

As if on cue, the mechanical voice of Buzz Lightyear cried out with all the excitement his microchipped voice could muster, “To infinity and beyond!”

I kinda like that.

The little fellow with the Buzz Lightyear action figure ducked his head and looked sheepish, but through his happy “accident,” he added a big dose of truth to the service.

I hope 2012 is filled with similar happy accidents for you.

Happy New Year
